I did not know my grandma on my father’s side. I never had the chance to meet her because she passed away following her battle with breast cancer on October 17th, 1993. Her name was Alice Senseman. I was born less than two years later on July 27th, 1995 and was named Katherine Alice Senseman. Despite never knowing my Grandma Alice, I have always felt a special connection with her because of our names. Events like Breaststroke 4 Breast Cancer have a special place in my heart because it keeps her wonderful, warm spirit alive. It is such an honor to be able to raise money for advancements in breast cancer treatments and research so that more girls and boys have the chance to meet their grandmothers. Northwestern’s Women’s Swimming and Diving team is a passionate group of young women, dedicated to finding a cure. As we prepare for this year’s fundraiser, I will be thinking about my Grandma Alice every step of the way.
